South Asian Menswear For Different Occasions: A Style Guide

11th December 2023

Honestly, the web and social media is inundated with tons of different style guides, lookbooks, and top tips for brides & bridesmaids; but it’s a man’s most important day too.

This is the exact problem that led to HIM Menswear being founded. Instead of a space in the corner of a large womenswear showroom, they have an entire (& super spacious) showroom dedicated to the groom. From head to toe, they can dress any groom for any occasion.

We sat down with Jasmine, co-founder of HIM Menswear, to talk through the various style statements they have in-store for any groom, any culture & any event.

The Royal Velvet Groom

Starting off strong with one of our favourites, this ones for the royal velvet groom. HIM Menswear says it’s one of their most popular chosen pieces for a nikah ceremony or reception events.

One of our favourite things is the versatility and the different ways to rewear this base piece. We’re always talking about the importance of sustainability and having a mix & match wardrobe for a South Asian bride, and the same goes for the groom.

Classic White Anarkali Sherwani

In complete contrast to the all-black attire, this all-white anarkali silhouette is perfect for anyone who wants more of an ethnic look. The different layers totally elevate the super-stylish look.

Jasmine, from HIM Menswear, shared her top tip with us: “Tons of grooms love and opt for this look because it is a super comfortable and relaxed fit around the hip & waist. This makes it super important for any groom whose top priority is comfort.”

The Chikankari Look

On that note of comfort, a chikankari sherwani is also 100% loved by a groom who prioritises comfort. Chikankari is a traditional form of hand embroidery that originated in Lucknow, India. It involves delicate and skillful handwork, showcasing the artistry and craftsmanship of skilled artisans. The intricate and detailed embroidery adds a touch of elegance and sophistication to the sherwani.

Chikankari embroidery is known for its light and airy feel, making it absolutely perfect for any summer out-door wedding or beach wedding groom. It’s made on lightweight fabrics like cotton, georgette, or silk, making it comfortable and suitable for various occasions.

Speaking of comfort, HIM Menswear have first-hand experienced different sherwanis which can cause rashes & irritation around the neckline, due to the embroidery, and carefully curate all their pieces to avoid this.

Of all the craftsmanship, chikankari is often seen as one of the most timeless fabrics that never goes out of fashion.

The Rajasthani Look

One of HIM Menswear‘s top unexpected client favourites for this year has to be this traditional, muted tones, regal Rajasthani look.

This entire year, we have seen tons of couples opting for Rajasthani-themed weddings, receptions & events; paired with deeper toned lehengas and sherwanis.

Alongside the contrasting colours & prints, the accessories (all available from HIM Menswear) totally boosts the look.

Printed Sherwani

Prints are trending! This two-toned printed sherwani is bound to make a statement on your wedding day. Paired with a navy blue velvet shawl and complementary velvet mojris, the team at HIM Menswear also helps style all your looks to perfection with in-store accessories.

Achkan-Style Half-Sleeve Sherwani

New trend alert! Be prepared to see a lot more of these jackets on lightweight achkan-style sherwanis.

The achkan sherwani and jacket combination exude a regal and elegant appearance. The long, tailored silhouette of the achkan, often paired with a well-fitted jacket, creates a super majestic look.

Similar to the anarkali sherwani style, this silhouette and jacket combo is a super roomy fit. This makes it easy for the wearer to move around, an important factor during wedding ceremonies and other festive events that may involve a lot of rituals and activities.

Fit For A King: Chipkan Sherwani

Derived from the mughal era, a chipkan sherwani contains traditional motifs imprinted onto brocade, alongside contrasting velvet and silk accessories.

Traditionally, we always see a chipkan sherwani in varying complementary shades of gold & red. For some of them, aari and zardozi embroidery is frequently used, characterised by the use of metallic threads, gemstones, and beads, are common embellishments.

Another classic & evergreen look!

HIM Menswear gives you the option to customise all of your looks. Whether you like the fabric and want a different colour, or like the embroidery but want it slightly lighter: they guide you through the entire process within 4-6 weeks.
